Cake Eggs!

Ok, so, I wanted to try my hand at cake balls!
But by the time I actually got around to the experiment,
it was time to start theme-ing things for Easter!
So, I made egg shaped balls the other day!

Cake eggs are easy! Well, that depends on how fancy you go with them.  I had planned on going all out with mine, but after running into a few complications, I decided to save time and make them a bit simpler.  All you need to do is get a cake, some icing, and some chocolate.  Crumble the cake, mix in the icing, form into egg shaped balls, freeze them with fondue sticks in them, then dip them in melted chocolate.  Tada!

Pretty vague, huh?  Ok, here's how I did it.

First you wanna start with a:
9x9 White cake
Well, ok, I made mine pink
This is a very simple cake, but it tastes great. I snagged it from here.  Feel free to use other cakes, though!
What you will need:
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk

What to do:

  1.   Preheat your oven to 350f and grease up a 9x9 cake pan.  I like to use  Wilton Cake Release.

  2.  Cream together the sugar and butter.

  3.  Add your eggs one at a time.

  4.  Stir in the vanilla.  (I also added some food coloring, at this point, just to be festive)

  5.  In a separate bowl, sift together your flower and baking powder.

  6.  Gradually add the dry ingredients to your mixer.  Stir just until completely mixed.

  7.  Add milk to batter and stir by hand until an even, smooth consistency.  Don't over-mix!

  8.  Pour batter into your greased pan and place in the oven for about 30 minutes.  Cake is done when springy in the middle.

Now that you have your cake ready, you can move on to actually making the cake eggs!

Let the cake cool for a few minutes.  You want it to still be slightly warm.

Cake Eggs

What you need:

  • A 9x9 cake (White cake shown)
  • 1 1/2 C Icing (White vanilla icing shown)
  • Some form of skewers (about 24)(Fondue forks work really well)
  • A big bag of chocolate morsels (24 oz bag should be good)
What to do:

  1.   Crumble the cake into a big bowl.

  2.  Add the icing and mix until it's nice and gooey.

  3.  Roll the cake into egg shaped balls, skewer, and place on a sheet of wax paper.

  4.  Place the eggs in the freezer for about half an hour.

  5.  Once the eggs have hardened, melt your chocolate according to directions on the bag.  If there are no directions, try placing morsels into a microwave safe bowl (deep enough to dip into) and microwave on half power for fifteen seconds.  Stir. And repeat until chocolate is smooth.  (Do not over heat chocolate! It will seize and there will be no way to melt it again.  Trust me, I found this out the hard way. White chocolate is especially hard.)

  6.  Dip your cake eggs into the chocolate and place onto a wax sheet.  Let them cool until the chocolate has hardened again.  If you want to decorate with sprinkles, though, I recommend doing that before they cool.

Yay! Cake eggs!!
